Genetics 101

Isabel and Nate : like two peas in a pod.

 

   이사벨과 네이트는 콩깍지 속의 콩 두 개 같다. (= 똑 닮았다. 판박이, 붕어빵)

 

In August's case,
the doctors were able to identify one of the "single nucleotide deletion mutations" that made war on his face.
The weird thing is, though you'd never know it from looking at them:

both my parents carry that mutant gene.
And I carry it, too.

 

   August의 경우, 의사들은 "단일 뉴클레오티드 삭제 돌연변이" 중의 하나가 그의 얼굴을 전쟁이 나게 했다고 했다.

   이상하게도, 그들을 보고 그걸 가지고 있는지 모르지만 부모님 두 분 다 그 유전자를 가지고 있다고 한다.

   그리고 나도 가지고 있다.

If I have children, there's a one-in-two chance that I will pass on the defective gene to them.

 

   내가 만약 아이를 가지게 되면, 그들에게 유전자 결함을 물려줄 확률은 2분의 1이다.

 

That doesn't mean they'll look like August, but they'll carry the gene that got doubledosed

in August and helped make him the way he is.

 

   그 의미는 그들이 August와 같지 않을 것이다.

   하지만 그들도 유전자는 가지고 있고, August는 두배 많은 유전자를 가지고 있어서 지금의 그가 되도록 도움을 줬을 것이다.

 

If I marry someone who has the same defective gene, there's a one-in-two chance

that our kids will carry the gene and look totally normal,

a one-in four chance that our kids will not carry the gene at all,

and a one-in-four chance that out kids will look like August.

 

만약 내가 결혼한 누군가가 결함 유전자를 가지고 있다면,

우리 아이는 그 유전자를 가지고 완전히 정상으로 보일 확률은 2분의 1이다.

우리 아이들이 그 유전자를 전혀 가지고 있지 않을 확률 4분의 1이고,

그리고 우리 아이가 August 같을 확률도 4분의 1이다.
